There are a lot of people out there trying to do the same thing as I am. Many people use Instagram as a platform to share their sustainable lifestyle. I often compare myself to other people on the app and feel inferior. But, I earlier this year I learned the term imperfect environmentalism. This has helped me a lot and I think it can help many other people.

What Is Imperfect Environmentalism?

I couldn’t find an exact definition for this term, but imperfect environmentalism to me, is a reminder that no one is perfect. People choose what to put on social media. We only see a small portion of their lives and they are not perfect environmentalists. In fact, I think more environmentalists should adopt this term because a lot of gatekeeping happens on social media and that is the LAST thing we need as we fight for climate action. We need everyone on board and no one is perfect. To conclude, remember… very few people are fully zero waste and you don’t have to be zero waste to be an environmentalist!
